Facebook Messenger’s Latest Update Gets Snapchat-Like Features

Facebook's latest Messenger update takes dead aim at Snapchat

Facebook has been coming for Snapchat’s innovation crown for some time now and the latest Messenger update may tip the scales. The latest update to Facebook’s hugely popular messaging app adds some big changes to its Camera feature, including filters, masks, stickers and frames.

The features comes in timely fashion, with a holiday-themed Camera button on display to make finding it a bit easier. To use the new Camera feature, you simply open the app and tap the Camera button.  Similarly to Snapchat, the feature lets users add filters such as candy canes and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. However, unlike Snapchat, photos on Messenger don’t automatically self-destruct.

The update may not pull users away from Snapchat, which passed 60 million daily active users this year, but it will certainly breathe new life into its Camera feature and make room for advertising possibilities. It’s a necessary update for Facebook, as the tech giant continues to seek ways to generate revenue from advertising.

The update is available today so head to your respective app store to get the new features.

Also if you haven’t checked it out already, you can now play PAC-MAN on Facebook Messenger.

To use Messenger’s new Camera, you simply open the app and tap the Camera button. The launch is timed specifically for the holidays, so Facebook is adding a special holiday-themed Camera button to Messenger to make finding it a bit easier.

Once you open Camera, you’ll be able to add what Facebook calls “Masks and Effects,” which are more or less equivalent to Snapchat’s lenses.

The feature lets you do things like add a virtual candy cane hat and glasses to video or photo that lets you blow out snow when you open your mouth. There’s also a Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer filter that turns you into the titular character and an effect that makes your snap look like a scene from A-Ha’s “Take on Me” video.
